Accessibility statement

Ashlar is not a real company. This website is a portfolio piece built for a fictional London builder. What this page says about how accessible the site is, though, is real.

Last updated 31 October 2026.

What we’re aiming for

We want anyone to be able to use this site, whether they use a keyboard, a screen reader, a phone with large text or a slow connection. We build and test it against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA.

What you can expect

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone. There’s a “Skip to content” link, the focus outline is always visible, and the menu, the project carousel, the before-and-after slider and the “How it works” steps all work with the keys.
  • Text has enough contrast with its background (at least 4.5:1, or 3:1 for large text), checked in the light, beige and dark sections.
  • You can zoom to 400%, or use a screen 320 pixels wide, without anything being cut off or having to scroll sideways.
  • Buttons and links are at least 24 pixels tall, so they’re easier to hit with a finger.
  • Photos that show something have a written description. Decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, the opening animation and the scroll effects are switched off and everything is shown straight away.
  • The quote form tells you what’s wrong next to each answer, takes you to the first one, and reads out the result to screen readers. It doesn’t use a CAPTCHA.
  • The site still works without JavaScript: nothing is hidden and the form still sends.

What isn’t perfect yet

  • Some text sits on top of photos, for example at the top of the home page. We darken the photo behind it, but automatic checkers can’t measure contrast on a photo, so we check those parts by eye.
  • So far the site has been tested by us, not by disabled people using it day to day. We’d like to change that.

If something doesn’t work for you

Tell us and we’ll fix it, or get you the information another way. Ring Marta on 020 7946 0321 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm) or email hello@ashlar.build. We reply within one working day.

How we tested

On 31 October 2026 we checked every page with axe-core, an automated checker, on a desktop screen and a phone screen; worked through each page with a keyboard; checked the layout at seven widths from 320 to 1920 pixels; and turned on “reduce motion”. We test again whenever we add a new kind of section.

Where the site stands

The site partly meets WCAG 2.2 level AA, because of the points under “What isn’t perfect yet”. We’ll review this statement in April 2027.
